Savannah Guthrie Gets Emotional Talking About Her Late Father
During a heartfelt appearance at the George W. Bush Presidential Center on February 15, Savannah Guthrie, the beloved co-host of the Today show, shared an emotional moment while discussing her new book, Mostly What God Does. The conversation took a deeply personal turn when she opened up about her late father, Charles Guthrie, whose passing left an indelible mark on her life.
Interviewer Charlotte Jones, aware of the sensitive nature of the topic, gently probed Savannah, saying, “You lost your father when you were 16, and I know that was very traumatic. Do you mind taking us back to that time?”
A Moment of Vulnerability
Savannah, now 52, found herself moved to tears as she reflected on her father’s memory. “Yeah, my father was a larger-than-life, amazing man—oh, I can’t believe you’re making me cry,” she said, wiping away tears with a mix of humor and emotion. “I haven’t cried about this in a long time. He was deeply faithful, and I can’t believe I’m crying. Darn you, Charlotte—you should be a Today show host!”

Her honesty and vulnerability resonated with the audience, offering a glimpse into the profound impact her father’s passing had on her life.
A Career and Life Changed Forever
Savannah’s emotional appearance came amidst a series of absences from the Today show, as she focused on promoting her book across the U.S. She spoke candidly about her father’s untimely death, saying, “He was our whole lives, and he passed away. He had a heart attack when I was 16. I came home one night, and he was gone.”
The loss of her father not only shaped her personal life but also influenced her career trajectory. Savannah admitted, “I know it changed me and probably changed the whole trajectory of my life. I often think that I would have been totally different if my father had lived. I just don’t know that I would have chosen this career. I might’ve stayed in my hometown.”
She added, “I don’t know what I would have done, but I know fundamentally it changed everything. And some things it changed for the better, in the sense of, I know that my heart is more tender because of it.”
Honoring Her Father's Memory
To honor her father’s memory, Savannah named her son Charles after him, following his birth in December 2016. Alongside her daughter Vale, whom she shares with husband Mike Feldman, Savannah continues to keep her father’s legacy alive in her family.
Previously, Savannah opened up about her father’s health and death during an August 2023 episode of Brooke Shields’ “Now What?” podcast. She reflected, “I think it changes everything. I always think of it as on our calendars we have B.C. and A.D. There’s a before and after. It’s just this stark dividing line. There’s before my dad died and there’s after, and it’s profound. Grief is a lifelong process. I really believe that. There’s acute grief.”
