In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Ingrid Seward opened up about the relationship between Prince Harry and King Charles. She said, “Prince Harry and King Charles were very, very close. They had a bond that many could only dream of. They got along incredibly well. But here’s the thing—Charles might regret not being stricter with his sons, Harry and William.”
Now, let’s break this down. We’re not talking about being overly harsh or anything like that. It’s more about setting boundaries and giving guidance. Seward believes that Charles could have given both boys a little more structure, which might have helped them navigate life a bit better.

Life After Diana: The Impact on Charles’ Parenting
After the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997, Charles had to pick up the pieces and continue raising his boys. Seward explained, “After Diana’s passing, Charles carried on with the way she approached parenting. Diana let the boys do pretty much what they wanted, which was very much in style back then. You know, letting kids just figure things out on their own.”
While this approach might have seemed trendy at the time, Seward believes it left a gap. “I think Charles regrets not being a bit firmer. If he had set more boundaries, it might have given Harry and William a stronger sense of direction,” she added.
Charles’ Reaction to Diana’s Passing
Seward, who penned the 2023 book My Mother and I, shared her insights into Charles’ emotional state after Diana’s death. She noted, “I think Charles was in absolute shock. He was trembling, trying to process everything that had happened. In that moment, he just patted Harry on the shoulder, which is what you might do when you’re in shock. It’s tough to just let your emotions out and hug someone right away. You’re kind of on autopilot.”
She continued, “I completely understand why Charles acted the way he did. But obviously, Harry held that against him. It’s a complex situation, and emotions run deep in these kinds of moments.”
Prince Harry, in his 2023 memoir Spare, opened up about his relationship with his father during this difficult time. He recalled the moment Charles broke the news about Diana’s accident. “He sat down on the edge of the bed,” Harry wrote. “He put a hand on my knee. ‘Darling boy, Mummy’s been in a car crash.’”
Harry went on to describe how Charles delivered the devastating news: “‘I’m afraid she didn’t make it.’ These words have stayed with me, like darts in a board. He said it that way, and I’m certain of that. She didn’t make it. And then everything seemed to stop.”

But his hand did fall on my knee again, and he said, ‘It’s going to be OK.’ That was quite a lot for him. Fatherly, hopeful, kind. And so very untrue.”
