Christina Applegate recently shared her deeply personal struggles with multiple sclerosis (MS) and how it has impacted her role as a mother. In a candid interview with People, the actress opened up about the emotional toll this journey has taken on her and her family. Her words are a testament to her resilience and honesty in the face of adversity.
Heartbreaking Realities: Christina’s Perspective on Parenting with MS
In a heartfelt conversation with People, Christina revealed that living with MS has been nothing short of heartbreaking. She explained how her daughter, Sadie, has witnessed the changes in her mother's ability to be the hands-on parent she once was. “My daughter’s had to see the loss of her mom, in the way that I was a mom with her,” Christina shared. “From dancing with her every day, picking her up from school, volunteering at her school, and even working in the library, these are all things she doesn’t see anymore. It’s tough for both of us.”
Life with MS: A Daily Battle
At 52 years old, Christina shares her life with her husband, Martyn LeNoble, and their 13-year-old daughter, Sadie. The star of Samantha Who? made her MS diagnosis public in 2021, and since then, she’s been navigating life with a new set of challenges. “If she comes into my room and sees me lying on my side, she knows she can’t ask me to do anything,” Christina continued. “That breaks me because I love doing things for my kid. I love making her food and bringing it to her, but there are days when I just can’t. But I try. I try so hard.”

Returning to the Spotlight: A Moment of Triumph
Christina made a rare public appearance at the Emmy Awards on January 15, where she was met with a standing ovation from the crowd of A-list celebrities. Her daughter, Sadie, was by her side, offering unwavering support. Despite the challenges Christina has faced in recent years, she expressed gratitude for having Sadie by her side during such a significant moment. However, Christina later admitted that she “blacked out” during the event, a testament to the physical toll MS can take.
Parenting Challenges: Finding Strength in Vulnerability
“It’s heartbreaking when you have to tell your child, ‘I can’t,’” Christina explained. “As a mother, you’re supposed to be their protector, their rock. But when you have to say, ‘I can’t,’ it feels like your soul is being torn apart. I’m sorry. I think about it every day. It’s something that haunts me.” These words paint a vivid picture of the internal struggle Christina faces as a mother trying to balance her love for her daughter with the limitations imposed by her condition.

When asked about returning to the set of Dead to Me, Christina admitted that while she misses the experience, the challenges of working with MS make it difficult to envision a return. “On Dead to Me, I had the support I needed, and it took everything I had to do it,” she explained. “I don’t think I’ll find a set that’s as accommodating again. So, I’m afraid. I don’t know if anyone will accept me the way I am now. But not being able to do it again, honestly, it breaks my heart. I miss it, of course I do.”
