On a recent episode of The View’s “Behind the Table” podcast, host Sara Haines shared a heartfelt and relatable story about her 8-year-old son Alec’s scary moment during a baseball game. You know those moments as a parent where your heart skips a beat? Yeah, this was one of those.

Alec's Big Moment on the Field

So here’s what happened: During a game where Alec was playing third base, the unthinkable occurred. As Sara recounted, Alec got hit right in the face with a baseball. Ouch! Now, before you freak out, let me assure you—Alec’s doing just fine, but at the time, it was a pretty intense situation. Sara's husband Max, who’s one of the assistant coaches for the team, was right there. Meanwhile, Sara was juggling her responsibilities as a mom of three, keeping an eye on her younger kids, Caleb and Sandra, who were nearby at the playground.

“I was sitting in my chair, trying to watch the game while also making sure Caleb and Sandra weren’t wandering off,” Sara explained. “I had just gone to check on them when I noticed something was wrong. I saw a player down, and when I realized it was Alec, my heart sank. You know that moment when you think, ‘Oh no, not my kid!’? That was me.”

Thankfully, Alec walked away with nothing more than a black eye. “The ball bounced weird and came right up and hit him in the eye,” Sara said. “It got pretty swollen and black and blue, and Alec was so upset. He thought it would go away after a day, but when it didn’t, he was crushed.”

Enter Max, who tried to lighten the mood. “Max said, ‘The ladies will love it,’” Sara joked. “Alec got so mad and said, ‘Papa, why would the ladies love it?’” Sometimes, humor is the best medicine, even if it doesn’t always land with an 8-year-old.

    Parenting Struggles and Reflections

Later in the podcast, Sara opened up about the challenges of raising three kids. “I always thought I’d have four because I grew up with three siblings,” she admitted. “But after having two, I don’t think we’d have chosen a third if Caleb hadn’t been a bit of a surprise. Life has a way of surprising you, doesn’t it?”

Sara also shared her thoughts on keeping her kids’ schedules manageable. “We’re not the kind of parents who overschedule our kids,” she said. “I feel like a 90-year-old man from the 80s in Iowa sometimes, but I believe in simplicity. We don’t sign up for everything just because everyone else does. Even now, with them at different ages, navigating their activities can be tough. Sometimes, it feels almost impossible to balance everything.”
