Let’s talk about the series finale of Good Bones. In this emotional episode, viewers watched as Tad Starsiak proposed to Anna Spiars in their stunning newly renovated home in Indiana. This project was overseen by Mina Starsiak Hawk and her mom, Karen E. Laine, who worked tirelessly to help the couple create their dream house. It was a moment filled with joy, love, and hard work.
Why Wasn’t Mina the Focus of the Last Episode?
In a recent episode of her “Mina AF” podcast, Mina, now 39, addressed a fan’s question about why the final episode of the HGTV show didn’t focus on her. It’s a fair question, and Mina took the opportunity to shed some light on the inner workings of reality TV. “It helped bring to light that not a lot of people understand the process of TV, particularly non-scripted reality TV,” she explained. “Even though reality TV isn’t scripted, there’s still a lot of suggested scenarios. For example, if you watch Vanderpump Rules, they might set up a pool party and invite certain people to create drama or excitement.”
How Was Good Bones Different?
“Our show was a little bit different,” Mina continued. “You can’t really control much when it comes to construction. It’s unpredictable, and the show wasn’t scripted. It was just about capturing what happened each day. But I think what people may not realize is the vast amount of footage that’s available to edit together to create any given episode. It’s like piecing together a puzzle to tell a story.”

The show’s finale aired in October 2023, and since then, all the cast members have continued their journeys in the home renovation world. In the past, Mina has mentioned some tension on set with her co-stars, including Karen, 61, Tad, 30, and project manager Cory Miller. But now, Mina says she’s in a much better place since the series came to an end. She explained that Good Bones was filmed full-time for a year to make an episode, documenting the entire renovation process from start to finish. All that footage would then be edited down to just 42 minutes of TV, which aired weekly. It’s a lot of work and a lot of story to condense into such a short timeframe.
A Look Back at the Show

Looking back, Mina felt that the producers did a good job of representing everyone involved in the show in a real and authentic way. “Whether I feel like towards the end or that last episode that was brought up was representative of what was actually going on, I also didn’t know a lot that was going on,” she admitted. “I didn’t really understand where a lot of other people in my circle’s heads were at with what they were doing in life, what they were doing on the show.”
Mina will be appearing in a two-part spinoff about her lake house renovation. “Everything that you guys see when episodes air is the first time I’m seeing it or any of us is seeing it,” she shared about the original Good Bones. “It’ll be different for my lake house spinoff because I’m an executive producer on that, so I get to see the rough cuts and stuff, but I also don’t get to change a whole lot. I get to see it so I know what’s coming. But with the original show Good Bones, none of us did, and that’s hard because when you have the opportunity to take things that actually happened and put them in whatever order you want to tell the story you want. You could tell 100 different stories. We joked all the time when we were still on joking terms about the many different shows we could make with the same footage, one of them being Good Bones After Dark.”
