Mina Starsiak Hawk Explains Why She Didn’t Change The Name Of Her Business

Meet Mina - Indiana Connection

Hey there, folks! Mina Starsiak Hawk, the beloved star of Good Bones, recently opened up about why she decided not to change the name of her business, Two Chicks and a Hammer, on her podcast, “Mina AF.” It’s a topic that’s been buzzing around fan circles since her mom, Karen E. Laine, retired from the business back in 2019. Let’s dive into what Mina had to say!

Why Keep the Name?

Mina, who’s been a force to be reckoned with in the world of home renovation, explained her reasoning during a recent podcast episode. She was joined by her husband, Steve Hawk, and together they discussed the significance of the company’s name. Here’s what Mina had to say:

“Listen, when Disney stopped being in charge of Disney, did they change the name? Nope. And let me tell you, I’m nowhere near as big or important as Disney. But the point is, the company’s name has meaning. I’ve been building this company since 2009, and when my mom decided to retire, I bought her share financially. Now, I own the whole thing, including the name, the copyrights, and everything in between. Changing the name would just feel silly, you know? I’ve been working hard to build this brand since 2008, and it’s become a part of who I am.”

Now, Mina gets it. She knows there are people out there who have strong feelings about the name. But here’s the thing—she’s made peace with it. “People do have wild feelings about it, and I get that,” Mina said. “But I did make a change to the logo. I made the word ‘hammer’ bigger, so it leans more into the construction side of things. It’s a nod to the work we do, and it feels right.”

Mina went on to explain that changing the name would almost feel dismissive. “This company was something we both started together. It would feel weird to take all the credit now that I’m running it solo. It just doesn’t feel fair, you know? The name represents our journey, and I’m proud of that.”

    What’s Next for Mina?

Just days before sharing her thoughts on the business name, Mina also opened up about her future in TV. Fans have been curious about whether she’d ever consider a full-time return to the small screen after the conclusion of Good Bones. Here’s what she had to say:

“I’ve loved making TV when it was fun and good. But let’s be real, the last couple of seasons were tough—emotionally, mentally, financially, and physically. It was wearing on me, and I was trying to figure out how to move forward in a way that felt sustainable. Right now, I’m signed on for a two-episode spinoff on HGTV, documenting the renovations of my new lake house. It’s exciting, but I’m also figuring out what the future holds.”

Mina added, “You’ve got to adapt with the times. Trying to figure out what kind of show could work with where I am in life, what will resonate with audiences, and what’s reasonably affordable to produce—it’s all up in the air. But I’m open to seeing where things go.”

So, what’s next for Mina? She’s currently working on a two-episode spinoff for HGTV, focusing on the renovations of her new lake house. But beyond that, she’s exploring what the future holds. “It’s all about adapting to the times and figuring out what works for me now,” Mina said. “There’s so much to consider—what resonates with audiences, what’s affordable to produce, and what aligns with where I am in life. It’s a lot to think about, but I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.”
