Alfonso Ribeiro recently shared his experience after his eldest son, AJ, had a bit of a scary moment during a baseball practice. AJ was hit in the eye with a baseball, and as any dad would, Alfonso was there to offer both comfort and wisdom.
Speaking to People in an interview published on June 24, the 52-year-old TV personality and beloved Dancing With the Stars host shared his thoughts on the incident. “When you play baseball, you’re gonna get hit with a ball at some point or another, right?” he said. “That’s just part of the game.” Alfonso’s calm demeanor highlights the inevitability of such accidents when kids are out there playing sports.
Baseball: A Game of Risks and Rewards
Alfonso went on to describe the imperfect nature of the game. “The field isn’t always great grass, right? The dirt isn’t smooth all the time,” he explained. “And in practice, the coach hit the ball. He was fielding the ball at shortstop.” This gives a vivid picture of what happened that day on the field. The ball took an unpredictable bounce—what they call a "bad hop"—and struck AJ right in the eye. Accidents like this remind us that no matter how prepared we are, there’s always a bit of unpredictability in sports.

But Alfonso assured fans that his son is doing well. “The black eye is gone. He’s back to playing baseball and injuring more parts of his body every day,” he joked. It’s clear that AJ hasn’t let this setback slow him down. “It’s just what he does, and he finds new ways to injure himself on a daily basis. And it’s called being 10, and being a boy. I love it,” Alfonso concluded, showing his pride in his son’s adventurous spirit.

Besides AJ, Alfonso shares two other children, Anders and Ava, with his wife Angela Unkrich. He also has a daughter, Sienna, with his ex-wife Robin Stapler. His family life is filled with laughter, love, and occasional injuries, as any family with active kids might experience.
Angela first shared the news of AJ’s injury on her Instagram account on June 14. In a video, she showcased the healing process of her son’s black eye, detailing the methods she used to reduce the swelling, including Tobacco leaves and castor oil. It’s clear that Angela is as hands-on and resourceful as Alfonso when it comes to helping their children recover from injuries.
Family History of Minor Mishaps
This isn’t the first time the Ribeiro family has dealt with an injury. Last year, Alfonso and Angela revealed that their daughter Ava, then 5, ended up in the ER after a scooter accident. Angela took to Instagram to share the story, captioning the post, “My poor baby. I woke up and had a vision/motherly intuition of Ava ending up in the ER today.” Despite her best efforts to avoid any dangerous activities, Ava ended up crashing off a sit-down scooter the day before her birthday.
Ava underwent emergency surgery where doctors had to carefully remove all the skin affected by her fall. Thankfully, with her family’s unwavering support, Ava celebrated her 4th birthday just days after the surgery. Alfonso expressed his pride in his daughter’s bravery and praised Angela for her incredible care during this tough time. “I’m forever grateful to @mrsangelaribeiro1 for being so amazing during this time. Long nights with a little girl in pain and having to apply medication every few hours. My two heroes,” he wrote.
