William Shatner's Race Against Time Sparks Concern Among Friends

Closer Weekly

Listen up, folks. William Shatner, the legendary Captain Kirk himself, is sparking some serious concern among his friends. According to an exclusive source, the 93-year-old icon is pushing himself to the brink with a relentless schedule. But why is he doing this? Let's dive in and find out.

Shatner's Philosophy on Life and Health

William Shatner has always been a man on the move, embodying the Star Trek mantra "Live Long and Prosper." Back in September 2018, he told NBC News, "My life has been so lucky — I’ve been so fortunate in terms of health, which is really the basis of everything." He added that while health and energy partly depend on personal effort, genetics and luck also play a significant role. In his memoir, Live Long and…: What I Learned Along the Way, Shatner reinforced the basics of a healthy lifestyle: no smoking, staying active, eating sensibly, and getting enough sleep. His self-help tip? "Don’t die. That’s it; that’s the secret. Simply keep living and try not to slow down." But as we all know, life isn't always that simple.

Shatner's Recent Health Battle

Despite his determination to keep going, Shatner has been through a tough battle. In April 2024, he revealed his battle with stage 4 melanoma, which started as a lump under his ear. "I went and had [the lump] taken out. It was melanoma, stage 4," he said. When someone in the room told him, "Sorry," Shatner quipped, "What are you sorry about?" It was a stark reminder of his mortality, with doctors warning him he might only have five months if the treatment failed. Luckily, the treatment worked, and Shatner is now cancer-free, reinvigorated, and determined to make the most of the time he has left.

But here's the kicker: Shatner's friends are worried. A source tells Closer, "He’s got all these things he wants to do and not a lot of time to do them in, and that’s propelling him to go around at this breakneck speed." The nonagenarian is on a whirlwind schedule, planning a special screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in Kentucky on October 4, followed by a planned Antarctic cruise in December. "He wants to go out with a blaze while loved ones would rather see him stick around, chill out and slow down," the source explains.

Shatner's relentless drive is evident, but it's not without consequences. In a heartfelt moment, he opened up about losing his father to the Toronto Sun in August 2022. "I’ve heard of people weeping, my father was incapacitated, he had had a stroke and he had tears in his eyes and I wonder quite often what he was crying about. Was he crying about leaving? I loved him very much and he loved me." Shatner added, "Was he weeping because of me and leaving this world? That’s the way I feel about it. That’s the way I want to feel about it. I don’t want to feel fear, but I’m afraid I feel fear." Now, it's his friends and family who are worried. "Bill’s always said the secret to longevity is to keep moving, but at this frenetic pace he’s liable to crash and burn," the source warns.
