Andrew Garfield Praises Mel Gibson’s Healing Journey
Let me tell you something—Mel Gibson has come a long way since that tough moment in 2006 when he was arrested for DUI. Recently, Andrew Garfield shared some heartfelt words about Gibson during an interview with People magazine. According to Garfield, Gibson has really turned things around, embracing a new chapter in his life. “He’s done a lot of beautiful healing with himself,” Garfield said, expressing gratitude for Gibson’s transformation. “Thank God, because he’s an incredible filmmaker, and he deserves to keep telling stories. He has such a big, compassionate heart.”
When Garfield, who is now 41 years old, worked with Gibson on the powerful 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge, he got to witness firsthand the depth of Gibson’s talent and humanity. “He’s not just some guy behind the camera,” Garfield added. “He’s an empathetic guy who feels deeply, and he brings that sensitivity to every scene.”
Lessons Learned from Mel Gibson
During their time working together on Hacksaw Ridge, Garfield gained some valuable insights into human nature. “I learned so much from Mel,” he confessed. “I learned that people can change, that they can grow, and that they deserve chances—second, third, fourth chances. None of us are perfect, and we all deserve respect. Mel taught me that healing is possible, and that’s a powerful thing.”

Garfield also shared how Gibson's directing style impacted him personally. “Mel would come out from behind the monitors with tears in his eyes,” he recalled. “He knows when a scene is right, and he knows when it’s not. You can trust him because he’s so connected to the material. He’s visceral, emotional, and deeply empathetic. He feels everything.”
From Controversy to Redemption
It’s worth remembering that Gibson’s road to redemption hasn’t been easy. Back in July 2006, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. After pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of driving with an elevated blood-alcohol level, he was sentenced to three years of probation. Thankfully, two other charges—driving under the influence and having an open container of liquor in his car—were dismissed.
Gibson faced additional consequences as part of his sentence. He was ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings five times a week for four and a half months, followed by three AA meetings per week for another seven and a half months. He also received a $1,300 fine, had his driver’s license restricted for 90 days, and was required to enroll in a three-month alcohol abuse program.

Facing the Past: Gibson's Public Apology
At the time of his arrest, Gibson made some deeply hurtful anti-Semitic remarks, which were documented in the police report. Understandably, this caused a lot of backlash. In a public statement issued in August 2006, Gibson addressed the controversy head-on. “There’s no excuse for anyone who thinks or expresses anti-Semitic remarks,” he stated. “I want to sincerely apologize to everyone in the Jewish community for the harmful words I said that night during my arrest.”
He went on to acknowledge the weight of his words as a public figure. “When I say something, whether it’s well thought out or just blurted out in a moment of madness, my words carry significance in the public eye,” he explained. “Because of this, I must take personal responsibility for what I’ve said and apologize directly to those who were hurt or offended.”
A New Beginning
Gibson’s DUI conviction was officially expunged in October 2009 after he successfully completed the terms of his three-year probation. Since then, he’s been focused on moving forward. In October 2016, Gibson proudly announced that he had reached a major milestone—10 years of sobriety. “I’m a member of the 12-step program, and through that, I’ve achieved sobriety,” he revealed during an appearance on Australia’s Sunday Night Channel 7. “I’ve got 10 years of sobriety under my belt, and it’s been a transformative journey.”
