Karen E. Laine Shocks Fans By Putting Her Dream Home On The Market

Good Bones' Karen E. Laine Is Selling Newly Renovated Wilmington Home

Let me tell you something that’s got the whole Good Bones fanbase buzzing. Karen E. Laine, the beloved DIY queen, has done something that no one saw coming. She’s put her Wilmington, North Carolina, dream home on the market. Now, here’s the kicker: Just a few months ago, she was all set to retire in that very house. Fans got to see her renovate the place during a special season of the show, but now? It seems like plans have changed. Big time.

Here’s the deal: This charming one-bedroom, one-bathroom house is currently listed for a cool $500,000 on Zillow. Karen originally snapped it up for just $70,000 back in February 2023. That’s quite the turnaround, isn’t it? Talk about flipping properties like a pro.

Why Did Karen Put Her Dream Home on the Market?

According to the listing, this house isn’t your average fixer-upper. It’s been completely rebuilt from the ground up, starting with a brand-new foundation and topped off with shiny solar panels. We’re talking about pristine white oak floors, an ultra-efficient kitchen, and even an EV car charger. Oh, and don’t forget the spacious second-story loft, perfect for anyone looking to turn their home into a creative hub. It’s basically a dream come true for anyone who loves modern, low-maintenance living.

  • Back in August, fans got a front-row seat to the entire renovation process during a special season of Good Bones. Karen didn’t go it alone this time around—she brought in some heavy hitters, including fan favorites Cory Miller, MJ Coyle, and Austin Aynes, to help bring her vision to life. This wasn’t just any project for Karen; it was supposed to be her retirement home. So what happened?

The Story Behind Her Change of Heart

Well, Karen opened up about her decision during the show. She explained that after years of enduring Indiana winters, she was ready for a change. “I am so over those Indiana winters,” she joked to her colleagues. “I started thinking, wouldn’t it be nice to retire somewhere warm? Wilmington seemed perfect.”

Turns out, Karen fell head over heels for Wilmington during a visit earlier this year. “I went there once and absolutely loved it,” she shared. “Then I went back in January, and it was 80 degrees during the day. I mean, who wouldn’t want to live in weather like that? So I hopped online, found a house for sale, and just went for it.”

But as Karen dove deeper into the renovation process, she started to realize something important: Moving to Wilmington full-time meant leaving behind the people she loves most—her family. “What I thought this house was going to be for me has completely changed,” she admitted in the third episode of the special season. “I bought this house to retire here, live here, and make it my forever home. But I realized I’d miss my family too much. I can’t live away from them.”

Instead of cutting ties with Indiana entirely, Karen decided to keep her options open. “This house is going to be a place I visit regularly,” she explained. “Maybe I can even get some of the grandkids on a plane, and we can spend a weekend together at the beach. That sounds like the best of both worlds to me.”

Is This the End of Karen’s Renovation Journey?

Not by a long shot. Even though she’s decided not to retire in Wilmington, Karen isn’t slowing down anytime soon. “I bought this house to retire, but what I’ve learned through this process is that I’m nowhere near done,” she confessed. Translation: More renovations are definitely on the horizon.

  • Of course, fans will remember that Karen retired from her business, Two Chicks and a Hammer, back in 2019. However, she continued to appear on Good Bones until the show wrapped up its initial run with Season 8 in October 2023. The end of the series wasn’t without its drama, though. Host Mina Starsiak Hawk revealed some tension within the cast, and when the show returned for a special three-episode run this summer, Karen and Mina didn’t share any scenes together. Instead, they focused on separate projects, leaving fans to wonder what really happened between them.
