You know those people in your life who just leave an indelible mark on your heart? For Candace Cameron Bure, that person was Bob Saget. Recently, she opened up about their 35-year friendship and shared a touching memory that captures the essence of their bond. It’s the kind of story that makes you smile even while your heart aches.
Speaking exclusively to Closer during the red carpet event for Cool Comedy • Hot Cuisine Benefiting the Scleroderma Research Foundation on October 29, Candace reminisced about some of her favorite moments with Bob. “When I was 16 or 17 and had just gotten my car, we’d hang out in it,” she said. “Scott Weinger from the show was often there too. Bob would play us the coolest music—it really shaped my musical taste.”
From Full House to a Lifelong Legacy
For nearly a decade, Candace and Bob were on-screen family on Full House, where he played Danny Tanner, the loving single dad, and she portrayed his eldest daughter, D.J. Tanner. But their connection went far beyond the set. “I miss him every single day,” Candace admitted. “Bob was one of the kindest, most generous people I’ve ever known. He made everyone laugh, but what stood out most to me was his loving heart. Anyone who met him could see how genuinely kind and giving he was.”

A Life Cut Too Short
Tragically, Bob passed away on January 9, 2022, at the age of 65. He was found unresponsive at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Florida while on tour for his stand-up comedy show. The cause of death was ruled accidental head trauma. His passing left a void not just in the lives of those who knew him personally, but also in the hearts of fans around the world.
Keeping Bob's Memory Alive
For Candace, keeping Bob’s memory alive is a conscious effort. “I think about him all the time,” she explained. “We talk about the memories we shared. If something reminds me of him, I share it with others. That’s how you keep someone’s legacy alive—you keep talking about them, celebrating their life, and honoring the impact they had.”
Candace has always been fiercely protective of her TV dad, as Bob once noted to his widow, Kelly Rizzo. This became evident when Candace traveled to Kelly’s home shortly after learning of Bob’s passing. “It was 100% for Kelly, but also for me,” Candace said on Kelly’s podcast, “Comfort Food with Kelly Rizzo.” “You just can’t comprehend it. With that kind of loss, you want to be surrounded by the people you love and try to make sense of it together.”
Bob married Kelly in 2018, but before that, he was married to Sherri Kramer from 1982 to 1997, during which they raised three daughters: Aubrey, Lara, and Jennifer. Since Bob’s passing, Kelly has moved on with actor Breckin Meyer, whom she confirmed as her partner at a 2024 Grammy Awards viewing party. Kelly told Closer that while dating after losing Bob was challenging, she believes he would’ve approved of her relationship with Breckin. “We joke all the time that Breckin is the one person on Earth Bob would’ve been okay with,” she said.
