Listen up, folks. In the penultimate episode of Blue Bloods, there was one key player noticeably missing, and trust me, the fans didn’t miss a beat in pointing it out. Will Hochman’s character, Joe Hill, was completely absent from the second-to-last episode of the series, and no one gave us even a heads-up why. It’s like he just vanished into thin air.
Now, let’s rewind for a moment. The episode had its fair share of drama, no doubt. We saw Erin Reagan, played by Bridget Moynahan, doing her best to play matchmaker by setting Anthony Abetemarco up on a date with Deanne Janson, portrayed by guest star Amanda Kloots. That was a fun subplot, right? Meanwhile, Frank Reagan, the patriarch of the Reagan clan, was deep in some tense talks with the governor in his office. And we even got a heartwarming moment with Henry Reagan at home. But where was Joe Hill in all of this?
What Happened During the Episode?
Let’s break it down. The episode wasn’t exactly short on action. Eddie Janko-Reagan, Luis Badillo, and Jamie Reagan were dealing with a hostile squatter, which added some much-needed tension. On another front, Danny Reagan and Maria Baez were investigating the suicide of a teen at a school. It was a heavy topic, and the episode ended with Danny and Baez visibly upset over the girl’s death. The family dinner scene was right in the middle of all this chaos. And guess who wasn’t at the dinner? You guessed it—Joe Hill.

This glaring absence didn’t go unnoticed by the fans. Social media lit up like a Christmas tree as viewers took to the show’s Instagram page to question what happened to Joe in the December 6 episode.
“No Joe?” one fan asked in a comment, expressing their disappointment. “Honestly, I was hoping for some familiar faces or past cases. What happened to him?” Another viewer chimed in, “I wish they could have focused more on the personal lives of the family. There should have been more Joe Hill, more Erin, and more Jack. Where did they go?”
Joe Hill’s Journey on 'Blue Bloods'
Joe Hill’s character has come a long way on the show. As the son of the late Joe Reagan and Paula Hill, he’s had quite the journey. It feels like the Reagans are finally accepting him after years of friction. His character arc has been nothing short of fascinating, and his development has been a joy to watch.

“Since Joe first met his Reagan family, he’s been through a whirlwind of change and growth,” Will Hochman told TV Insider on November 18. “Every case he works with his family teaches him not only about the job but also about himself. He’s matured, and there’s less pressure to prove himself and more of a desire to give back. A lot of this growth has come from working with Danny and Jamie on the job and from the meaningful conversations they share during those in-between moments.”
Will did hint that he filmed the final dinner scene on the show, which will take place in the series finale on Friday, December 13. He was also featured in the photos released ahead of the series finale.
Final Thoughts on the Show
“I joined the show just before the pandemic hit. Now, four years later, one of the constants in all that uncertainty has been gathering around the Reagan table and bringing family dinner to life,” Will shared with the outlet. “I’ll miss it. The final family dinner had an extraordinary feel to it, almost sacred. After 14 years, this was the last one. I did my best to be present, take it all in, look people right in the eye, and be there together.”
