Shelley explained the harrowing ordeal, saying, "I couldn’t put out the cinders on his roof with a hose because the water was switched off by @LVMWD Las Virgenes Municipal Water. Even the 50 brave firefighters had no water all day!"

Shelley's pain is palpable as she recounts the events of that fateful day. Despite her valiant efforts, she couldn't save her son. "He said, 'Mom, leave me,' and no mom can leave their kid," she tearfully told 10 News First. With a broken arm and limited mobility, Shelley couldn't lift or move her son. The situation was beyond heartbreaking.

During an interview with 10 News First, Shelley expressed her anguish, saying, "He was my baby; he died needlessly." The cruel reality of the situation is that Shelley's calls to 911 went unanswered due to downed phone lines. She drove to a nearby fire station for help, but even the firefighters were powerless without water. When Shelley returned to her estate, she found Rory's cottage reduced to ashes. She took solace in knowing that her son passed away peacefully from carbon monoxide poisoning, sparing him from pain.
