According to a source who spoke exclusively to Closer, Sharon is truly heartbroken about Richard’s decision to leave the U.S. permanently and relocate to Spain. This news has left her feeling conflicted and deeply saddened.
A Lifelong Friendship Tested by Change
“Richard and Sharon’s friendship spans decades, and they’ve always been there for each other through thick and thin. They’ve navigated the highs and lows of long careers in Hollywood, where loyalty is rare but theirs has remained rock solid,” the insider revealed. “Sharon, though, is not one to throw in the towel. She’s fiercely patriotic and believes deeply in the values that make this country great. No matter what challenges she sees ahead, she doesn’t believe in walking away.”
Why Sharon Hopes Richard Reconsiders
The source went on to explain, “Sharon is deeply disappointed by Richard’s choice to move to Spain and essentially turn his back on making a positive impact here. Richard, now 75, and Sharon, 66, first crossed paths back in 1994 during the filming of Intersection. Their connection was immediate, and it’s been a lasting one ever since.
A Look Back at Their Early Days Together
Back in May 2016, Sharon shared a nostalgic moment on social media, posting a photo with Richard from the set of Intersection. She captioned it, “A fun #flashback to 1994 with my talented friend, Richard Gere, on the set of our movie #Intersection (1994) dir. #MarkRydell. We fought on camera but had a blast making this movie. ‘What does a girl have to do?’”
Earlier this year, Richard announced plans to move to Spain, where his wife, Alejandra Silva, hails from. He explained his reasoning to Vanity Fair Spain, saying, “For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends, and her culture. She was incredibly generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it’s only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers.”
Richard added, “I adore Spain and think their way of life is fantastic. The ability to radiate joy and happiness is remarkable. It’s a beautiful place, the cuisine is outstanding, and the people are warm, generous, and always eager to laugh and enjoy life.”
Six months after making this announcement, Richard sold his estate in New Canaan, Connecticut, for an impressive $11 million. Still, he retains a residence in the U.S., mentioning a home located “in the countryside near New York,” which he can use for trips back stateside.
Don’t expect to see Richard gracing the Hollywood scene anytime soon, though. He’s not exactly a fan of Los Angeles anymore.

“When I hear the word Hollywood, it feels foreign to me,” he confessed to Vanity Fair Spain. “I haven’t lived in California for over twenty-five years, nor have I filmed a movie in Los Angeles during that time.”
