Kelly Clarkson Opens Up About Balancing Motherhood And Career

Kelly Clarkson Overcame ‘Mom Guilt’ & ‘Shame’ While Raising Her Kids

There’s something truly special about Kelly Clarkson, isn’t there? She’s not just one of the most talented singers out there—she’s also one of the most relatable celebrities. And a big part of that is how open she is about her life, especially when it comes to being a mom. She doesn’t sugarcoat it, but instead gives us a raw, honest look at what it’s like to balance a demanding career with raising a family. That’s why so many people admire her.

In a recent conversation with Closer Weekly during the Hollywood Beauty Awards, Kelly shared some heartfelt insights into her parenting journey. "Five minutes ago, my five-year-old daughter guilted me because I was supposed to be home tonight," she revealed with a laugh. "But you know what? She gets it. She understands that sometimes we have to do things for other people, and that selflessness is an important lesson—for her and for me. We’re not perfect, but we make it work. We’re up with them in the morning, we’re there at night, just like any other parents juggling nine-to-five jobs. Plus, we make sure to take vacations and truly unplug from everything. Oh, and we’ve got this little escape—a ranch in Montana where we can just breathe and recharge."

For Kelly, motherhood isn’t just about raising her own two kids, River Rose (5) and Remington (3), whom she shares with her husband Brandon Blackstock. She’s also a stepmom to Brandon’s children, Savannah and Seth. With all these responsibilities, you’d think she’d be overwhelmed—but somehow, Kelly finds a way to keep everything in balance. How does she do it? Well, let’s dive deeper into her secrets.

How Kelly Finds Peace Amid Chaos

Kelly admits that her life is often chaotic, but she’s developed strategies to stay grounded. "You know, I think creative people get overwhelmed no matter how busy they are," she explained. "For me, writing has always been my solace. Whether it’s jotting down stories or composing songs, it’s my way of shutting everything else out. And when I need to relax, I turn to classical music—it’s the only thing that doesn’t distract me with lyrics. Honestly, I just love escaping into a good book. Reading is my escape, and it helps me recharge." Sounds like a pretty solid self-care routine, right?

But parenting isn’t just about finding peace for yourself—it’s also about watching others grow. Kelly shared how becoming a mom has changed her longtime friend Simon Cowell, who’s also a father now. "Oh, Simon? He’s all mushy now," she joked. "Having kids makes you softer, more selfless. It forces you to prioritize what really matters. Parenting changes you in the best ways—it’s made me stronger, but let’s be real, it’s tough. Being a parent is hands down the hardest job I’ve ever had, but it’s also the most rewarding."

    Family Comes First

It’s no secret that Kelly puts her family first. She’s even adjusted her work schedule to ensure she spends quality time with her kids. "When we were putting together the schedule for the show, I made it clear: 'I have to drop my kids off at school, and I’m always the one who puts them to bed,'" she told People. "You’ve got to prioritize and juggle, and don’t feel guilty about it. It’s all about making people understand that family time is non-negotiable." That’s something we can all learn from, isn’t it?
