There’s nothing quite like a mother celebrating her child's birthday, and Katie Couric did just that when her youngest daughter, Carrie Monahan, turned 24. The renowned journalist, known for her work on the Today show, took to social media to honor the special occasion with a heartfelt message that resonated with fans and followers alike.

Katie then added a touching poem inspired by Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game," recalling the wonder and innocence of childhood. “Hard to believe this was 24 years ago! Yesterday a child came out to wonder, caught a dragonfly inside a jar, fearful when the sky was full of thunder and tearful at the falling of a star,” she reminisced. Family Memories and Reflections
Katie's tribute wasn't just about celebrating Carrie's milestones; it was also about reflecting on their family's journey. Alongside her words, she shared a collection of photographs that showcased different phases of Carrie's life. One of the pictures featured Katie's eldest daughter, Elinor Monahan, holding her newborn sister while their late father, Jay Monahan, looked on with pride. These images not only highlighted the family's love and unity but also served as a reminder of the bittersweet memories they've shared since Jay's passing in 1998.
Keeping the Legacy Alive
Though Jay is no longer with them, his memory continues to inspire Katie and her daughters. In February 2019, Katie revealed the significance behind Elinor’s engagement ring, noting that it was the same one Jay had given her. “OMG. Ellie and Mark are engaged!” Katie wrote, adding, “And she’s wearing the ring her dad gave to me.” The gesture symbolized the enduring connection between the family members, even across generations. Katie's pride in her daughters and her dedication to preserving Jay's legacy shine through in every post and every word she shares.

Even in her current life, Katie keeps Jay's memory alive. Recently, she and her second husband, John Molner, underwent colonoscopies in honor of Jay's battle with colon cancer. “Honoring Jay’s memory by helping so many patients like us,” Katie expressed on Instagram after the procedure. Her commitment to remembering Jay shows just how much his love continues to impact her life.
Despite finding new love and moving forward, Katie maintains a deep connection to Jay. Speaking with Closer Weekly, she explained, “I think about him all the time. We still have photos of Jay all over the place, and I try to keep him alive in our day-to-day interactions. I honored him by raising two pretty great kids who have a lot of him in them.”
