You know, we all know Charlize Theron as this powerhouse in Hollywood—someone who’s conquered so much in her career. But if you ask her, the thing she’s proudest of isn’t an award or a movie role. It’s the day she became a mom. Recently, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about the first time she laid eyes on her first child, Jackson, and it’s just as emotional as you’d imagine.
“I remember it like it was yesterday. I saw Jackson through a window. I got out of the car, and there she was, being held by someone inside. My heart literally jumped out of my chest—it was like I couldn’t even catch it,” Charlize, now 44, shared during an episode of W magazine’s podcast “Five Things With Lynn Hirschberg.” “It’s this visceral, overwhelming emotion. The fact that I managed to keep it together at all is honestly amazing. Yeah, it’s incredible. It really is.”
When it came to adopting her second child, the experience was just as unforgettable. “The second time around, I had to wait two hours before meeting her. Those were hands down the longest two hours of my life. When I finally met her, she looked like a little lizard,” Charlize recalled with a laugh. “She had severe eczema—her whole body was covered. I remember the caretaker saying, ‘She looks a little rough.’ But hey, this was MY baby! I was meant to have this little lizard baby!”

Meet Charlize’s Children: Jackson and August
Of course, Jackson isn’t Charlize’s only child. She’s also the proud mom of August, whom she’s spoken about fondly in the past. Back in April 2019, the blonde beauty revealed something truly special about Jackson, who was 8 at the time: he’s transgender. “Yeah, I thought she was a boy too,” Charlize told Daily Mail in an interview. “Until one day when she was three years old, she looked at me and said, ‘I am not a boy!’ And just like that, everything changed.”
