It’s been almost a decade since Allison Janney and Viola Davis first worked together in the blockbuster hit, The Help. While their characters didn’t share screen time back then, the two powerhouse actresses have finally reunited for Troop Zero. The magic is back, and this time, they’re stealing the show together.

Back Together: Allison Janney Opens Up About Working With Viola Davis

At the Los Angeles premiere of Troop Zero on January 13, 2020, Allison Janney, the award-winning star of Mom, couldn’t contain her excitement about working with Viola Davis once again. In an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, the 60-year-old actress revealed just how thrilled she was to finally act alongside Davis. “I did enjoy it!” she gushed. “It was such a treat for me to finally get to act with her. We were in The Help together, but we didn’t get to share any scenes. This was one of the most thrilling experiences of my career.”

Allison’s enthusiasm isn’t surprising. Viola Davis, a powerhouse in her own right, brings an electrifying energy to every role she takes on. For Allison, the chance to collaborate with her was nothing short of magical. “It wasn’t long enough!” she joked, reflecting on their time together on set. “I wish I had more scenes with her because she’s absolutely incredible to work with. She’s so dynamic and inspiring—it’s pretty awesome.”

For Troop Zero, Allison took on the role of Miss Massey, a character that initially seems villainous but has layers waiting to be uncovered. “This character was a blast to play,” she explained. “I love a challenge. I love diving into a character that’s perceived as evil on paper and making them well-rounded. Even if they’re not likable, I want the audience to empathize with them a little bit.”

Allison went on to describe the process of bringing Miss Massey to life. “Getting the accent down was a lot of fun. I love working on accents and figuring out the backstory of a character,” she said. “There’s so much that isn’t on the page, but I have to figure it out in my own mind to understand who I’m playing. It was an incredibly rewarding experience.”

A Look Back: The Help and Its All-Star Cast

The Help, directed by Tate Taylor and based on Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 novel, was a game-changer for both Allison and Viola. The film brought together an all-star cast, including Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, and Anna Camp. It was nominated for Best Picture at the 2012 Academy Awards and earned Octavia Spencer an Oscar win.

While The Help didn’t give Allison and Viola the chance to share screen time, Troop Zero more than made up for it. Directed by Bert & Bertie, this quirky and heartwarming film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and hit theaters on January 17, 2020.
