Micky Dolenz: Love, Legacy, And Life Beyond The Monkees

Micky Dolenz Says He Feels 'Very Grateful' for His 'Blessed' Life

Remember the Monkees’ 1966 hit, “I’m a Believer,” where Micky Dolenz sang, “I thought love was only true in fairy tales”? Well, guess what? For Micky, love has been more than just lyrics. Over his 75 years, he’s been surrounded by an outpouring of love from family, friends, and, of course, his legendary bandmates. It’s been a journey filled with ups and downs, but through it all, Micky has remained grounded and grateful.

Brotherhood Beyond Music

Micky exclusively opened up to Closer Weekly about the deep bond he shares with the Monkees. “When you go through what we did together, it’s like being siblings,” he shared in the magazine’s latest issue, now available on newsstands. The Monkees weren’t just a band; they were a family. So, when Davy Jones passed away in 2012, followed by Peter Tork in 2019, Micky felt like he had lost his brothers. “It hit me hard,” he admitted. “But that’s what happens when you share such a unique experience.”

Carrying the Torch with Mike

Despite the loss of his bandmates, Micky and his sole surviving Monkee, Michael Nesmith, have kept the spirit of the group alive. Together, they tour under the name “The Monkees Present: The Mike & Micky Show.” It’s a celebration of their shared history and a testament to their enduring friendship. “We’ve always had this wonderful blend,” Micky said of Michael, who’s now 77. “Musically, it’s really worked, and we get along well in comedy too. It’s like picking up where we left off, but with a new twist.”

Long before Micky became a household name as part of the Monkees, he was already a star in his own right. As a child, he played the lead in the TV series Circus Boy from 1956 to 1958. But fame didn’t go to his head. “My parents were very level-headed,” Micky explained. “We lived on a ranch in the San Fernando Valley, and when I’d come home from shooting, I’d still have to clean the pool. That kept me grounded.”
