Lin-Manuel Miranda's Unexpected Journey Into Homeschooling
Mary Poppins Returns star Lin-Manuel Miranda is discovering firsthand what teachers go through every day. During an appearance on the Wednesday, March 18, episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: At Home Edition, he shared how he's been homeschooling his kids amidst the coronavirus outbreak. It's not exactly the life he imagined, but it's giving him a new perspective on the challenges educators face daily.
“Everything’s pretty much under control. We’re doing what everyone else is doing—self-quarantining. That means we’re staying at home with our two little ones,” Lin-Manuel said, referring to his wife, Vanessa Nadal, and their children—Sebastian, 5, and Francisco, 2. “We’ve got a kindergartener and a toddler, so this whole homeschooling thing is a brand-new adventure for us.”

Lin-Manuel's Newfound Respect for Educators
But let’s be real—homeschooling isn’t exactly a walk in the park. Lin-Manuel, 40, couldn’t help but agree with Shonda Rhimes when she tweeted that teachers deserve way more pay. “Been homeschooling a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old for just over an hour,” the TV producer wrote on March 16. “Teachers deserve to make a billion dollars a year. Or a week.”

Lin-Manuel found himself laughing as he admitted to Jimmy Fallon that he hasn’t had a moment to work on any new material. “I’m not getting anything done! I’m learning how to teach math,” he joked. It seems like this unexpected chapter in his life is teaching him more than just math—it’s giving him a deep appreciation for the dedication and patience teachers bring to their craft every single day.
Lin-Manuel's Smart and Talented Kids
While Lin-Manuel might be a little overwhelmed, he doesn’t have to worry about his kids understanding his lessons. When he attended the CTAM TCA Summer Press Tour in July 2019, the Moana composer revealed that his son Sebastian is a quick learner. After playing a song for Sebastian, the little guy picked up the tune almost instantly. But since the song wasn’t released yet, Lin-Manuel had to have a quick chat with his son about keeping it under wraps.
