Listen, we all go through pivotal moments in life that change everything. For Gwyneth Paltrow, one of those moments came when her then-husband Chris Martin told her something life-altering—that she might be dealing with postpartum depression. Let’s talk about it.

Recently, the 47-year-old sat down with Julia Louis-Dreyfus on an episode of her Goop Podcast to reflect on what it was like raising her second child, Moses, in 2006. Gwyneth opened up about how she initially didn’t realize she was struggling with this condition. “With my son, I had it quite badly, and I didn’t even know it,” she confessed. “I just thought I was failing at life. I was so emotionally scattered, completely disconnected from myself, and it felt so isolating. It was one of the darkest periods I’ve ever faced. I was lost, and I didn’t understand why.”

Chris Martin Steps In: The Moment That Changed Everything

But here’s where Chris Martin truly stepped up. One day, he approached Gwyneth and said something that would change her perspective entirely. “It was a game-changer when my ex-husband—my husband at the time—came to me and said, ‘I think you might have postpartum depression,’” Gwyneth recalled. “At first, I was shocked. Like, ‘What? Where is this coming from?’ But as soon as he said it, something inside me clicked. It was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. Having someone not only notice but also name what I was feeling was a lifeline. And I thought, ‘Wow, you’re absolutely right.’”

    Finding Help and Healing

Once Gwyneth realized what she was dealing with, she took action to heal. “I knew I needed help. I couldn’t keep going like that,” she explained. “So, I started reaching out for support. I began doing yoga, which helped me find some peace. I tried acupuncture, which was surprisingly effective. And most importantly, I started seeing a therapist. Slowly but surely, things started to improve. It wasn’t overnight, but the fog began to lift, and I started feeling like myself again.”

Gwyneth and Chris also share their daughter Apple, now 15. It’s no surprise that she holds her ex-husband in such high regard, given how supportive they’ve remained throughout their split in 2016. They’ve always prioritized staying connected for the sake of their kids.

    A Family That Stays Together

“Yeah, I think we’ve managed to maintain a strong family unit despite everything,” Gwyneth shared during an interview with ES Magazine. “Chris is more than just a former spouse—he’s a close friend. We talk every day, and our commitment to putting the kids first has never wavered. Even though the separation was tough, seeing how well our children have adjusted makes me proud of what we’ve accomplished together. It’s been a journey, but we’ve stayed true to our promise to prioritize them above all else.”

We couldn’t be happier that Gwyneth and Chris continue to support each other, proving that love and partnership can endure even after the end of a marriage.
