Let’s give it up for the mom of the year! Marie Osmond had to get creative to celebrate her daughter Abigail's high school graduation while in quarantine. With the world turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic, the iconic "Paper Roses" singer decided to honor her 17-year-old with a hilarious yet heartfelt gift: a pair of toilet paper earrings. It’s quirky, it’s fun, and it’s definitely something we can all laugh about during these uncertain times.
In a playful Instagram post shared on Sunday, May 24, Marie captioned the moment with a message that resonates deeply with parents and graduates alike. She wrote, “I said, ‘Honey, I know graduating in the class of 2020 isn’t ideal, but I want you to look back at this graduation with joy and laughter.’” Marie then revealed the reason behind the quirky gift, saying, “Then I gave her these earrings to memorialize it! I smiled and said, ‘Congratulations for graduating in 2020, the year of much-needed toilet paper. May your life be like the toilet paper roll… long and useful.’”
View this post on InstagramThese past few months have been tough on the kids who were getting ready to graduate. My daughter Abby is one of them. It’s been a disappointment for sure, but as parents, we’ve tried to keep things as upbeat as possible. I said, ‘Honey, I know graduating in the class of 2020 sucks, but I want you to look back at this graduation with joy and laughter.’ Then I gave her these earrings to commemorate it! I smiled and said, ‘Congratulations for graduating in 2020, the year of much-needed toilet paper. May your life be like the toilet paper roll… long and useful.’ She wasn’t thrilled, especially when I jokingly asked her to give a commencement speech. I thought about what I would have liked someone to say to me that would have helped me through life. So I chose this thought to share with Abby: I AM YOUR CONSISTENT COMPANION. I AM YOUR GREATEST HELPER OR YOUR HEAVIEST BURDEN. I WILL PUSH YOU ONWARD OR DRAG YOU DOWN TO FAILURE. I AM COMPLETELY AT YOUR COMMAND. HALF THE THINGS YOU DO YOU MIGHT AS WELL TURN OVER TO ME, AND I WILL DO THEM QUICKLY AND CORRECTLY. I AM EASILY MANAGED; YOU MUST MERELY BE FIRM WITH ME. SHOW ME EXACTLY HOW YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE, AND AFTER A FEW LESSONS, I WILL DO IT AUTOMATICALLY. I AM A SERVANT OF ALL GREAT MEN AND ALSO TO ALL MEN’S FAILURES. THOSE WHO ARE GREAT, I HAVE MADE GREAT. THOSE WHO ARE FAILURES, I HAVE MADE FAILURES. I AM NOT A MACHINE, BUT I WORK WITH THE PRECISION OF A MACHINE PLUS THE INTELLIGENCE OF A MAN. YOU MAY RUN ME FOR PROFIT OR RUN ME TO RUIN; IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO ME. TAKE ME, TRAIN ME, BE FIRM WITH ME, AND I WILL PUT THE WORLD AT YOUR FEET. BE LAZY WITH ME, AND I WILL DESTROY YOU. WHO AM I? H-A-B-I-T! So, Class of 2020 (and everyone else!), what I want to share with you today is that your habits can make or break you. Setting good habits can be as simple as starting your day by making your bed or writing down three things you’re grateful for each night. But I think the best habit to have is to strive to have a heart filled with love. Love your family, your friends, those around you, and especially the Lord. The more you love, the more love you have to give. Congratulations, Class of 2020!

Marie’s Heartfelt Message to the Class of 2020
Marie may have had the best of intentions, but Abigail wasn’t exactly thrilled with her mom’s unconventional gift. In fact, the teen seemed a little mortified, especially when Marie jokingly asked her to deliver a commencement speech right there at home. But behind the humor lies a deeper message. Marie explained that she wanted to share something meaningful with her daughter and her followers—something that could help them navigate life’s challenges. “I thought about what I would have liked someone to say to me that would have helped me through life,” she reflected. And that’s when she decided to talk about the power of habits.
“Setting good habits can be as simple as making your bed in the morning or writing down three things you’re grateful for each night,” Marie said. “But I think the best habit to have is to strive to have a heart filled with love. Love your family, your friends, those around you, and especially the Lord. The more you love, the more love you have to give.”
Marie’s Family Life Amid the Pandemic
Marie shares her life with seven children, including Abigail, from her marriage to Brian Blosil. While Abigail is the youngest, she also has six other kids: Jessica (32), Rachael (30), Brandon (23), Brianna (22), Matthew (20), and Michael Bryan, who tragically passed away in 2010 at the age of 19. During the pandemic, Marie has found solace in spending quality time with her family. “I really love spending quality time with members of my family,” she said in an earlier Instagram post. “It has been fascinating watching them grow into adults.”
For Marie, the quarantine period has been a time of immense joy as a mother. “It’s been such a joy to see how much they care for one another,” she revealed during an episode of The Talk on March 30. “You wonder, when you leave this earth, are your children going to stay close? Are they still going to connect? And I know they will. It’s just been this wonderful peace that they really love each other and they’re looking out for each other.”
