Let's face it—being a working mom is no picnic, and Drew Barrymore knows this all too well. The beloved actress recently opened up about the emotional rollercoaster she experienced during quarantine earlier this year. Between juggling homeschooling and work, Drew admitted she felt overwhelmed and, at times, heartbroken for her daughters, Olive and Frankie.
“I felt like I was drowning at first,” Drew, now 45, revealed in an interview with InStyle for their August Badass Women Issue. “Trying to balance being a mom, teacher, provider, and friend was exhausting. I felt so sad because I realized I was the only person I could offer my kids during that time. It was tough.”

Finding Her Way Through the Chaos
It wasn’t until Drew realized she needed to step back and take control that things started to improve. “I had to remind myself that it’s okay to need a break,” she explained. “I’m always so empathetic and patient with others, but I forgot to give myself the same grace. It’s almost like I was punishing myself, and that’s not healthy.”

While homeschooling her daughters, Olive, 7, and Frankie, 6, Drew also shared how she manages to stay informed without overwhelming her kids. “I don’t watch the news in front of them because I worry about the images they might see,” Drew admitted. “But I also don’t want to shield them from reality entirely. They need to understand what’s happening in the world.”
Drew has taken an active role in educating her daughters about important issues like racism and social injustice. “We’ve been reading books and having open discussions about these topics,” she said. “They’re incredibly aware and curious, and I want to make sure they grow up understanding the world around them. Taking them to events like the Women’s March has been a powerful way to show them how important it is to stand up for what’s right.”
Gratitude and Pride
Despite the challenges, Drew couldn’t be prouder of her daughters. “My girls mean everything to me,” she gushed. “I never thought I’d be a mom, and when I finally decided to have kids, I wanted to get it right. Waiting was the best decision I ever made. Now, I can’t imagine my life without Olive and Frankie.”

As a dedicated mom, Drew often puts immense pressure on herself to be the best parent possible. Earlier this year, she explained the difficulties she faced adjusting to life in lockdown. “When I
