In a statement released by Reba's representative, the severity of the incident was made clear: “While my team and I were in Atoka, OK, yesterday checking out an old historical building, a staircase collapsed. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.” The representative went on to express gratitude to the Atoka fire and police departments, who swiftly evacuated everyone from the building, ensuring everyone’s safety.
A Terrifying Moment Caught on Camera
A video of the dramatic rescue was shared on Twitter by NBC’s Oklahoma affiliate KTEN News reporter Lisanne Anderson. In the clip, we see the 66-year-old singer being carefully helped down a ladder by firefighters while Rex, 64, watches anxiously from above. The footage paints a vivid picture of the chaos and danger that unfolded that day.

Atoka Emergency Management Director Travis Mullins spoke with local news channel KXII, shedding light on just how precarious the situation was. “It opened our eyes to see exactly just how unsturdy [the building] was and when [it] did collapse we [saw] what little was holding them up,” Mullins explained. The building, which is reportedly over a century old, was clearly in a state of disrepair.

The incident occurred as Reba and Rex were touring the historic downtown building with Coby Scherrill, considering it for a potential future project. Coby recounted the terrifying moment when the staircase gave way. “We were just touring the building and the stairwell was weak but we did not realize how weak it was until several people had gone down it and then we heard the crash and saw the stairs fall,” he recalled.
Despite the scare, Reba and the others were fortunate to avoid serious injury. According to KXII, paramedics were on hand to check over the Grammy-winning artist at the scene. Thankfully, only minor injuries were reported, with just one person requiring further medical attention at a local hospital.
