Let’s talk about one of Hollywood’s most iconic actresses, Oscar-winner Ellen Burstyn. Known for her dramatic performances, she’s now bringing the laughs to moviegoers with her latest project. “I truly believe that right now, people need to experience moments of lightness and enjoyment,” Ellen tells Closer. “We’ve all been through tough times, and it’s time to rise above the darkness and embrace joy. Whether it’s holding hands with a loved one at the movies or just laughing out loud, these moments are precious.”
Why Queen Bees Is a Must-Watch
Ellen is thrilled about her new film, Queen Bees, which she describes as the perfect antidote to the heavy themes of our times. “It’s a delightful romantic comedy featuring four leading ladies over 70,” she explains with a twinkle in her eye. In this film, Ellen plays Helen, a fiercely independent senior who reluctantly moves into a retirement community while her house is being repaired. What she finds there is far from boring—cutthroat bridge tournaments, mean-girl antics, and the unexpected joy of making new friends and rediscovering love. “This movie is a celebration of life at any age,” Ellen emphasizes. “It’s important for women, especially, to see themselves represented in all stages of life and know that it’s never too late to start anew.”
Ellen’s Journey: From Drama to Comedy
Ellen’s storied career began long before her Oscar-winning role as a widow forging a new life in 1974’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. She’s always been drawn to compelling stories. “When I pick up a script, I ask myself if I’m turning the pages eagerly, wanting to know what happens next,” she says. “If I find my mind wandering, then it’s not the right project for me. But if I’m captivated, I’m all in.”

For Ellen, acting has always been a natural fit. Born Edna Rae Gillooly in Detroit, she knew early on that her path lay in the arts. “I was never destined to be a physicist or a chemist,” she jokes. “I always had a flair for storytelling. Acting felt like the perfect way to express myself. While I’m not a great musician or even a particularly strong writer, acting is where I shine. It’s been my passion since I was a child.”

Ellen’s passion for acting was evident early on. In high school, she was the president of the drama club, producing and starring in musicals. “I made my professional stage debut in 1957’s Fair Game. My very first audition was for a lead role on Broadway, and I landed it. That was a huge confidence booster,” she recalls. Over the next two decades, Ellen worked tirelessly, taking guest roles in films and television shows. But it wasn’t until The Last Picture Show that she found herself in a role that truly showcased her talent. “That was my breakthrough moment,” she says with pride. “It opened so many doors for me.”
Living Life to the Fullest at 88
Despite being three times divorced, Ellen Burstyn continues to lead an active and fulfilling life. “I’m incredibly grateful for my health and well-being,” she says. “I eat well, stay active, and avoid bad habits. Taking care of myself has allowed me to feel great at 88.”
And if that’s not impressive enough, Ellen recently took on the challenge of raising a puppy. “Let me tell you, house-training a puppy in the city is no joke,” she laughs. “Between the elevator trips and park visits, it’s exhausting. But she’s such a bundle of joy and fun that it’s all worth it. Life’s too short not to enjoy every moment, even the messy ones.”
