Let’s talk about Drew Barrymore, the mom of two amazing kids, Olive and Frankie. Drew has been an incredible force in their lives, but she’s the first to admit that motherhood isn’t always a walk in the park. Looking back on the day she became a mom for the very first time, Drew revealed that she was in full-on "fight or flight" mode because she was so scared of making mistakes.
The Early Days: Fear and Uncertainty
Here’s the real deal: when Drew Barrymore, now 46 and hosting her own show, talked to Entertainment Tonight on May 6, she was brutally honest about the overwhelming emotions she faced when she first became a mom. "I was just terrified," she admitted. "I was so sleep-deprived, I couldn’t eat, I was constantly nervous, and no one really talked about how intimidating and overwhelming it can be. So, I wasn’t really prepared for that."

Reflecting on the birth of her daughter Olive in 2012, Drew shared that she had this romanticized idea of what motherhood would be like. But let’s be real—it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies. "I thought it would be a little more romantic and cozy," she said. "But instead, I found myself in this intense 'fight or flight' mode for what felt like forever. It wasn’t at all what I expected."

Feeling Alone in the Chaos
Drew welcomed Olive with her then-husband, Will Kopelman, and despite having a partner and a beautiful baby girl, she still felt incredibly isolated in those early days. "I felt alone while trying to adjust to my new role as a mom," she confessed. "So if there are other moms out there who felt the same way at the beginning, you are not alone—I felt that way too."
And here’s the kicker: she also had some words of admiration for those moms who seemed to handle it all with ease. "For any mom who felt casual and capable, you are a superhero! I wish I could have been like you," she added with a mix of humor and admiration.
Finding Balance Over Time
As the years have passed, Drew, who also gave birth to her daughter Frankie in 2014, has gotten better at navigating the ups and downs of motherhood. While she still battles with "mom guilt" from time to time, she's figured out how to strike a balance between her career, parenting, and taking care of herself.
"I find that squeezing in alone time, me time, when the kids are busy, really helps me feel less guilty," Drew explained to ET. "Like when they’re in school or on a playdate, I take that time for myself, and it somehow feels a little less guilty."
