Savannah Guthrie: From Ditching Classes To TV Stardom

Savannah Guthrie has lit up the screen for years as a beloved broadcast TV host, particularly during her remarkable 11-year journey on the Today show. The journalist, known for her sharp wit and warm personality, credits her humble beginnings for shaping who she is today. Despite her current success, she openly acknowledges that her early days weren’t exactly filled with glowing predictions about her potential.

Early Days: A Far Cry from Today’s Savannah

During an interview with People, Savannah, now 53, revealed that no one was cheering about her "natural talent" as a young TV hopeful. In fact, she described herself as anything but a prodigy. "No one. And by the way, certainly not in high school when I was ditching class and smoking cigarettes at Denny’s and barely got into college and almost didn’t pass the SAT," she confessed. Savannah continued, "Not then, and not even when I started in local news and had my first job and my hair was terrible, my voice was insane, and I didn’t know what I was doing. I was there! I know how unlikely this is. If I had seen me, if anyone had seen me, it would be the last person you would ever say, ‘Boy, that one’s got potential.’ It’s the truth!"

Faith as a Guiding Light

Throughout her career, Savannah has leaned heavily on her faith, which has become a cornerstone of her life. This deep belief inspired her to write a children's book titled Mostly What God Does is Love You. On February 25, she even had a heartwarming moment when her 10-year-old daughter, Vale—who she shares with husband Mike Feldman—interviewed her on the Today show. The couple also has a son, Charley, who’s 8 years old.

  • Vale inquired about her mom’s faith and how it’s guided her through life. This exchange moved Vale’s godmother and fellow Today host, Jenna Bush Hager, to tears. "I’m so lucky to be her godmother," Jenna, 43, said, her voice cracking with emotion. "But I’m so proud of her because you know everything you’ve given to them, all of your faith that you’ve passed on so gently without preaching, without demanding, are in those little kids. And when the world feels dark, that is hope. Anyway, you can see it."

    Learning from Mistakes

While Savannah’s career has brought her countless beautiful moments, both solo and with her family, it hasn’t been without its share of challenges. On February 6, she joined Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM show, Radio Andy, and recounted her most embarrassing interview from her rookie year on the Today show. "Khloé [Kardashian] was on, and there had been these stories circulating in the press that her father, Robert Kardashian, wasn’t really her father," Savannah explained to Andy, 56.

She went on to say that the Today producers at the time were insistent that she broach the topic with Khloé. However, Savannah was extremely uncomfortable asking such a personal question. Eventually, she managed to squeeze it in just before the segment ended. "I said, 'Khloé, and just real quickly, in the seconds we have, there’ve been some stories that Robert Kardashian is not your father. Is he?'" Savannah recounted. "I don’t know if she’s such a pro that she saw them counting down like 'three, two …' And she said, 'Yep, I know. Nothing to it.' And I was like, 'And we’ll be right back.'"
