Let me tell you a story about one of Hollywood’s brightest stars, Renée Zellweger. She’s had a career that most people can only dream of, but even the most enviable paths come with their challenges. In 2010, after more than a decade of being at the top of her game, this Oscar-winning actress decided she needed a break. Not just any break—a serious pause from the whirlwind of fame. Renée opened up exclusively to Closer, saying, “I was sick of the sound of my own voice. Every time I spoke, it felt like I was stuck in a loop. ‘Oh, my gosh, listen to you. Are you sad again, Renée? Oh, is this your mad voice?’ It was exhausting, and honestly, it felt like I was reliving the same emotional experiences over and over again.”
Fast forward to this February, and Renée, now 55, is back on the big screen in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. This isn’t just any comeback—it’s her fourth appearance as the beloved, lovelorn character, Bridget Jones. In this installment, we find Bridget navigating life as a widow raising a child alone. But here’s the twist: she attracts the romantic interest of a younger man. Renée shares her love for Bridget’s character, saying, “What I adore about her is her unshakable optimism and her unwavering belief in love. Even in the face of adversity, she remains hopeful. That’s what makes her so relatable and endearing.”
Stepping Away to Find Balance
Renée took a bold step when she decided to step away from the spotlight for six years. Her decision wasn’t made lightly; it was born out of a deep need to recover her joy. “One thing I realized is that I didn’t know how to strike a healthy balance,” she explains. “I felt this immense pressure to say yes to everything. Whether it was an event, a project, or anything tied to my work, I felt obligated to say yes without considering my own needs.”

This constant yes-saying came at a cost. It meant missing out on important moments in the lives of her loved ones—birthdays, weddings, and milestones that can never be reclaimed. “I needed to stop and reassess. I had to figure out how to make room for myself in my own life,” Renée reflects. “It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary.”
During her hiatus, Renée embraced a simpler, more fulfilling lifestyle. She adopted two senior dogs and traveled across the country with them, creating memories that were purely her own. She indulged in her passion for storytelling by studying screenwriting and even co-writing a TV pilot. And, most importantly, she spent quality time with her family and godchildren. This time away allowed her to find her footing again, setting her up for success when she decided to return to acting.
“I wasn’t in a good place mentally or emotionally,” Renée admits. “I needed space—space to breathe, to not have every moment of my life planned out two years in advance. I wanted to allow for spontaneity, for accidents, for the unexpected. There had to be moments of quiet, moments where ideas could naturally flow in without the noise of constant work.”
