Robert De Niro Opens Up About Fatherhood: His Journey With Baby Gia

When it comes to fatherhood, Robert De Niro knows a thing or two. The legendary actor, who’s portrayed fathers in countless films, admits that nothing compares to the real deal. In a heartwarming moment, the star of Killers of the Flower Moon got emotional while talking about his youngest child, Gia Virginia Chen De Niro. Born in April 2023 to him and girlfriend Tiffany Chen, Gia has completely transformed his world.

At 80 years young, Robert is glowing with pride and love for his daughter. In an interview with AARP The Magazine for their February/March 2024 issue, he said, “It feels absolutely incredible. All the things that used to consume me or keep me up at night just fade away when I look at her. She’s this little miracle that has changed my life in ways I never imagined.”

Little Gia Joins a Growing Family

Gia, now 9 months old, is not just Robert’s youngest child but also his first with Tiffany, who he’s been with since 2021. She joins six other kids from previous relationships: Drena, Raphael, Julian, Aaron, Elliot, and Helen. While his family is already large, Gia brings a special kind of joy that’s hard to put into words.

  • “When she gets older, who knows what kind of person she’ll grow up to be? But for now, there’s this incredible sweetness in the way she looks at you. It’s like she’s taking everything in, observing the world around her. It’s beautiful,” Robert shared, his voice filled with awe and admiration for his little girl.

De Niro’s Journey as a Dad

Robert first announced the arrival of his seventh child while promoting the film About My Father. Back in May 2023, he told Entertainment Tonight, “I just had a baby.” He couldn’t hide his excitement, and it was clear that fatherhood meant the world to him.

In another rare moment, he opened up about his relationship with his kids. “You know, my kids don’t always agree with me, but they’re respectful about it. My 11-year-old daughter sometimes gives me a hard time, and we argue, but I adore her. It’s part of the process. And now, with my youngest, there’s so much more to come. That’s just how it goes,” he explained.

Robert also shared that Gia is sleeping well, and he’s thrilled with how his blended family is coming together. Recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone, he’s clearly juggling a successful career with the joys of family life.

Encouraging His Kids to Follow Their Dreams

While his eldest daughter, Drena, followed in his footsteps and became an actress, Robert has never pushed his children toward Hollywood. “I tell my kids, ‘If you want to be an actor or anything else, that’s great as long as you’re happy. Don’t sell yourself short.’ That’s all I ask—push yourselves a little further and go after what you truly want. Don’t be afraid,” he told People back in January 2020.
