In a heartfelt Q&A session she hosted on her Instagram Stories back on January 4, Mina revealed just how challenging this past year has been for her, both personally and professionally.
Facing One of the Toughest Years Yet
In her own words, Mina, who’s 39, admitted that making the changes in her life over the past year has been one of the hardest things she’s ever had to do. "It's been mentally and emotionally draining—way harder than even dealing with infertility," she shared with her followers. And if that wasn’t tough enough, doing it all in the public eye has made the journey even more challenging. It takes a lot of courage to navigate such personal and professional transitions while the world is watching, and Mina is handling it with grace and honesty.
Settling Into the Next Phase of Life
Even though she’s made some big changes, Mina confessed that she doesn’t quite feel settled or like she’s moved into the "next phase" of her life just yet. It’s a process, and she’s taking it step by step. For anyone who’s ever felt like they’re stuck in limbo, Mina’s openness about her journey is both relatable and inspiring.

Before the end of Good Bones, Mina bravely shared her struggles with infertility with her fans. She and her husband, Steve Hawk, decided to try IVF in hopes of expanding their family. They were already parents to their son, Jack, but were heartbroken when their first round of IVF didn’t work out. Back in December 2019, Mina wrote on Instagram, “I honestly hadn’t had much hope in our one embryo jumping perfectly through all the hurdles that exist between it fertilizing and an actual baby being born, so it hit me a bit harder than anticipated.”
Despite the setback, Mina found solace in her relationship with Steve, who she described as her “light every single day.” Eventually, they turned to intrauterine insemination, which proved successful. In March 2020, Mina excitedly announced she was pregnant with their second child. Their daughter, Charlotte, was born in September 2020, bringing even more joy to their family.
Family Challenges Amid Career Shifts
While Mina and Steve have built a beautiful family of four with Jack, now 5, and Charlotte, 3, they’ve faced some bumps in the road with other family members and former co-stars. Relations with Mina’s mom, Karen E. Laine, are strained, as is her relationship with her brother, Tad Starsiak. Additionally, Mina is not on speaking terms with Good Bones co-star Cory Miller. Amid all these challenges, Mina is focusing on her next big venture: opening her new Two Chicks District Co. retail store in Noblesville, Indiana, in March.
“I’m still scared and anxious a lot of the time, but I know where I want to land (at least personally) and am just working towards that,” Mina told her Instagram followers. “And trying to not screw up along the way. We’ll see where my career lands once I get a good handle on the rest.” Her determination and willingness to share her struggles remind us that even the most successful people face challenges, and it’s okay to be vulnerable.
