Let’s talk about sequels for a moment. Some movies just don’t need them, right? But others? Well, they’ve got that kind of magic that makes you want to see what happens next. And when it comes to Julia Roberts, one of Hollywood’s brightest stars, she’s starred in plenty of films that fans would love to revisit. So, the big question is: Which movie does she think deserves a sequel? Spoiler alert—it might surprise you!
Julia Roberts Spills the Beans on Watch What Happens Live
On a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, the Academy Award-winning actress, now 56, sat down with host Andy Cohen to chat about everything from her career to her personal life. During the show, a viewer asked her an intriguing question: If she could pick one movie from her illustrious career to get a sequel, which one would it be? Now, Julia didn’t hesitate for a second before answering. She said, “That’s a really good question, and I’ve never been asked it.” Then, she dropped the name of the film that’s been close to her heart for years—My Best Friend’s Wedding.
A Trip Down Memory Lane: My Best Friend’s Wedding
Released back in 1997, My Best Friend’s Wedding became a cultural phenomenon. It’s the story of Julianne “Jules” Potter, played by Julia, a food critic who finds out her best friend Michael O’Neal (played by Dermot Mulroney) is getting married—to someone else! The twist? That someone else is the vivacious Kimberly “Kimmy” Wallace, played by Cameron Diaz. In the film, Jules attempts to sabotage the wedding, only to fail spectacularly as Michael ends up marrying Kimmy instead. It’s a movie that resonated with audiences and still holds a special place in many hearts.

Julia admitted that if there were ever a sequel, she’d love to dive deeper into what happened after the credits rolled. “I’d love to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going,” she said. Many fans might have hoped for a different outcome at the end of the movie, but Julia sees the potential for a rich, engaging story about what happens next.
Who Should Have Gotten the Guy?
During the interview, Julia also opened up about her own feelings about the original film. When asked who she thought Michael should have ultimately ended up with, Julia didn’t mince words. “Well, I mean, of course, Jules,” she said with a laugh. “But he married Kimmy!” It’s a sentiment that many fans of the movie share. After all, who wouldn’t want to see Jules and Michael find their way back to each other?

But the conversation didn’t stop there. Julia also shared some fascinating insights into her career journey. For instance, did you know that she landed the role of Shelby in Steel Magnolias because Meg Ryan was busy filming When Harry Met Sally? “And so I got that part,” Julia explained. It seems like luck has played a big role in her career, but as she points out, sometimes destiny has a way of working things out.
She recounted another instance where luck was on her side when Cate Blanchett had to step away from the movie Closer due to pregnancy. “So I got that part,” Julia said with a smile. “I’ve lucked into some good stuff.”
Not Every Role Was a Sure Thing
Of course, not every opportunity came her way. Julia revealed that she passed on roles in The Last of the Mohicans and You’ve Got Mail, where Meg Ryan starred. When asked if she regrets passing up any roles, Julia was reflective but ultimately content. “Well, none that I have regrets about because I feel it’s all kind of destiny,” she said.
