Let’s talk about Ghostbusters, a movie that’s been a massive part of Ernie Hudson’s life for forty years now. In a recent interview with The Independent, the legendary actor opened up about the 2016 reboot of the classic film. While he’s a big fan of director Paul Feig, Ernie admitted he found the reboot “disappointing.”
Here's what Ernie, who’s now 78, had to say: “Look, I’ve always admired Paul Feig, and I’ve got nothing bad to say about him as a person or a director. But I just don’t get the whole reboot thing. If you’re going to do it, why not just create a sequel instead? You know what I mean? The original Ghostbusters has such a special place in people’s hearts. Why mess with that?”
Ernie’s Take on the 2016 Reboot
Now, the 2016 version of Ghostbusters brought us an all-female cast, featuring comedy legends like Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Cecily Strong. Ernie himself even made a cameo appearance. While he praised the cast for their individual talents, saying they’re “brilliantly funny on their own,” he felt the reboot didn’t quite live up to the expectations set by the original.

“Let me be clear, I enjoyed the movie. It had its moments. But it wasn’t what the fans were hoping for,” Ernie explained. “The original Ghostbusters had a certain magic. Fans were deeply invested in those characters, and I think the reboot didn’t quite capture that same spark.”
Ernie’s Return in New Ghostbusters Sequel
Fast forward to 2024, and Ernie is back in the spotlight as Winston Zeddemore in the new sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. He’s joined by fellow OG Ghostbusters Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. Before this, Ernie also reprised his role in the 2021 sequel, Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Reflecting on his long journey with the franchise, Ernie said, “It’s been 40 years since the first Ghostbusters movie. Over half my life has been tied to this franchise in some way. I’ve been acting for close to 60 years, and there are some films I’ve made that I secretly hope they never even think about remaking.”
Fame and Legacy: Ernie’s Perspective
Ernie acknowledges that for many fans, his work in Ghostbusters overshadows his other projects. But he’s okay with that. “Most things come and go, you know? A lot of people didn’t even notice that I was in three films last year. But that’s just the way it is. Acting is a job, and it doesn’t automatically give you special status,” he said.
He went on to add, “I haven’t reached the level of success where people can’t recognize me on the street or where I’ve made so much money that I can’t count it. I’m still just a working guy. And I’m okay with that.”

Over the years, Ernie has also been vocal about the pay disparity he faced compared to his fellow cast members in the original Ghostbusters. “They couldn’t have paid me less money. It’s a tough business, and a lot of it comes down to perception. Certain people are thought to deserve outrageous salaries, while others who work just as hard don’t get the same recognition. Studios can get insulted when these actors even ask for more,” he shared in an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment in March 2023.
