It’s been more than two decades since Princess Diana’s tragic passing, yet her memory continues to resonate deeply. Four months after her death, her ex-husband, Prince Charles, penned a heartfelt letter to a close friend, expressing the “unbearable emptiness” he felt in her absence. He admitted that he often wished he could wave a magic wand to turn back time and undo the pain they both endured. “I was overwhelmed by bewilderment and confusion,” Charles wrote, highlighting the emotional toll of losing someone so significant in his life.

While their marriage had its challenges, including one of the most publicized divorces of the 1990s, Charles and Diana shared a bond that began with genuine love. “There was a time when their connection was undeniable,” says royal biographer Ingrid Seward. “Diana wanted her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, to understand that love and cherish it as part of their family legacy.”

Charles and Diana’s journey began in 1977 when they were introduced by Diana’s sister, Sarah McCorquodale. Their relationship blossomed three years later. “They hit it off instantly,” Sarah recalled. “They shared a playful sense of humor and a mutual passion for ballet, opera, and sports. It was clear they were meant for each other, and they were absolutely thrilled about their future together.”

He was warm, approachable, and made her laugh—a quality she cherished deeply.”

Theirs was a love story that captivated the world. In 1981, Charles and Diana tied the knot in a fairytale wedding that millions tuned in to watch. Their joy only grew when Prince William arrived the following year. During Diana’s pregnancy with Prince Harry, they experienced some of the happiest moments of their marriage. Speaking candidly to biographer Andrew Morton, Diana fondly remembered the summer of 1984 as “the closest we’ve ever been—and ever will be.”

Though their relationship eventually took a different path, the love they once shared remained etched in their hearts. “Diana always wanted people to know that she loved Charles, and he loved her,” Seward explained. “Even after everything, that bond was something they both held dear.”
