Robert Herjavec’s Moment of Realization
If you’ve ever watched Shark Tank, you know Robert Herjavec as one of the most successful and respected entrepreneurs on television. But even the best of us can get caught up in moments of envy. Recently, Robert admitted that jealousy of his costar Mark Cuban almost derailed his perspective on success.
In a candid video shared on his Instagram account, Robert recounted a memorable high school visit where a young student asked him why he worked so hard. His response? To afford a jet bigger than Mark’s. “I had a great jet, but it wasn’t as big as Mark’s,” Robert said. “And if I’m being honest, it probably bothered me on some level. So, I just kind of said it.”
Mark Cuban’s Humble Response
Mark Cuban’s reply was quick and unexpected. “Which one?” he asked without hesitation. That simple question hit Robert like a ton of bricks. “Here I am competing to have a single jet bigger than my friend Mark’s, and what I realized is Mark actually has three,” Robert explained. “It really humbled me.”

This moment of clarity made Robert reflect on his journey. “When I started my company, my entire goal in life was to make $1,000 for my age to buy an old Corvette and to pay off my mortgage one day,” he recalled. “That was it. I would have been the happiest guy in the world. And here I am, competing with my friend because he has a bigger jet.”
Reconnecting With Purpose
After the high school visit, Robert took a few days to reflect on his life and career. “I thought about it and I said, ‘I’ve lost my purpose. I’ve lost my compass. I’ve become, honestly, a bit of a jerk,’” he admitted. “Life is not about competing with someone else. It’s about finding your own purpose.”
This interaction with Mark Cuban became a pivotal moment for Robert. “That one statement alone from Mark made me retool, made me repivot, and went back to the core of why I’m in business and why I want to do great things,” he explained. “It was a key moment that I’ll always remember.”
A New Chapter in Robert’s Life
Since then, Robert’s life has transformed in many ways. In 2016, he married Dancing with the Stars pro dancer Kym Johnson, and they welcomed twins Hudson and Haven in 2018. He is also a proud father to Caprice, Skye, and Brendan from his first marriage to Diane Plese.
The Instagram video resonated with many, including Shark Tank costar Daymond John. “Wow! I remember that day. And I remember thinking I HATE YOU BOTH!” he joked in the comments. “All joking aside, this is such a powerful message that many won’t understand. You left out that your company had massive growth in the years to come after that. Hopefully it was your newfound focus on what matters most.”
