Raising two daughters under the Hollywood spotlight can be tough, but Busy Philipps is determined to ensure her 11-year-old Birdie and 6-year-old Cricket grow up to be self-assured young women. In a world that often sets unrealistic expectations, Busy is committed to setting an example for her kids.
Leading by Example: The Power of Living Authentically
“The key to helping my kids embrace their true selves and express their beliefs lies in me doing the same,” says the Busy Tonight star, 40, in an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly. She emphasizes the importance of practicing what she preaches, especially in a world filled with societal pressures. "If I want my daughters to be confident, I need to show them what confidence looks like in action," Busy explains.
Instilling Confidence Through Actions, Not Just Words
Busy, who shares her daughters with husband Marc Silverstein, stresses that leading by example is crucial. "You can lecture kids all day about the lessons you want them to learn, but children soak in what they see more than what they hear," she insists. "If Marc and I don’t live according to the values we’re teaching them, it’s all for nothing. They’ll pick up on our actions and mirror them."

I hope you and yours had a great one too and that you got everything you asked Santa for and then some and that the fights were few and the gratitude was abundant and if it’s sad for you today know tomorrow is a new day I promise. And also I love you. ❤️🎄❤️🎄
Eliminating Harmful Conversations Around Body Image
Busy and Marc, 48, have made a conscious effort to avoid any discussions about body image or societal beauty standards around their daughters. "It’s so important because they’re young women growing up in a world that often places too much emphasis on looks," Busy emphasizes. "We’ve managed to create an environment where those kinds of conversations simply don’t happen." She adds, "We don’t talk about how other women look or conform to traditional beauty standards. It’s about focusing on who they are as individuals, not what they look like."
This approach extends to Busy’s own self-perception. Recalling a moment from one of Birdie’s birthday parties, she shares, "I remember feeling insecure about wearing a bikini for her pool party. But then I realized, why am I letting this affect me? My kids don’t see me the way I see myself—they think I’m perfect. So, I just decided to be present and be the mom they needed me to be."

Navigating Social Media Criticism
A significant part of raising confident daughters is allowing them to express themselves freely. Busy acknowledges the challenges of dealing with social media backlash regarding her parenting choices. "People love to judge others, whether you’re famous or not," she says. "But I’ve learned to let go of that judgment and focus on what’s best for my family. I hope others can extend the same kindness and understanding to me."
