When it comes to casting Dwayne Johnson in an action-packed movie, it’s practically a no-brainer. The actor has become a powerhouse in the genre, starring in the Fast and Furious franchise, the ever-growing Jumanji series, and the upcoming Jungle Cruise. But as Dwayne himself admits, none of these roles compare to the excitement of stepping into the shoes of the super-powered antihero, Black Adam.
Why Black Adam Excites Dwayne Johnson
In a recent Instagram video Q&A session with fans, the star couldn’t contain his excitement. “I am so pumped to play Black Adam,” he said. “I don’t even have the right words to express how thrilled I am. For many of you, it’s no secret that Black Adam has been a part of my life for over a decade.”

The Long Wait for Black Adam
“That gives you a glimpse into just how passionate I am about this project,” Dwayne continues. “Back in 2008, we started discussing it, and it’s taken patience from everyone involved. Over the years, I’ve grown as both a person and an actor. I wanted the timing to be right, and now, as the man I’ve become, I feel ready to bring my life experiences and philosophies into the DNA of Black Adam.”
Black Adam: A Deep and Complex Character
Originally created in 1945, Black Adam first appeared as an adversary to Captain Marvel (not to be confused with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Brie Larson version). Back then, Captain Marvel was known as Shazam before a name change, as seen in the recent film starring Zachary Levi. According to Wikipedia, “Black Adam was originally portrayed as a corrupted, ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel, who fought his way to modern times to challenge the hero and his allies. In recent years, however, Black Adam has been reimagined as a flawed antihero seeking to clear his name and reputation.”

Dwayne explains, “There are so many layers to Black Adam. His character is built on resolve, determination, and unwavering strength. But there’s also darkness within him. One of the things I love most about him is that he was blessed by the gods with powers equal to Superman’s. Not only that, but he possesses the magical power that Superman lacks, which makes him incredibly intriguing to me. Now, I’m not saying there’s going to be a showdown between Black Adam and Superman, but maybe, just maybe, down the road…” Dwayne hints, teasing the idea alongside Henry Cavill, the latest actor to portray Superman on the big screen.

Black Adam vs. Superman: A Tale of Two Heroes
“When you think about Superman,” Dwayne adds, “he stands for truth, justice, and the belief that everyone deserves a fair trial, even the villains who’ve caused immense harm to the world. Superman believes in bringing them to justice and letting the system handle the rest. However, Black Adam, who started as a supervillain and evolved into an antihero, operates differently. If you cross him, harm his family, or betray his people, he won’t send you to jail. He’ll rip you in half—literally. That’s the essence of who Black Adam is.”
What’s Next for Black Adam?
