But as fate would have it, Goldie, now 74 years old, changed her mind at the last minute while rushing to the hospital in a car. Here's the incredible story behind how Kate got her name.
The Moment Kate Hudson’s Name Was Born
“She kicked me so hard right in my, well, let's just say it was a place where you don't want to be kicked, that I decided right then and there to change her name because she was tough,” Goldie recounted with a laugh to People on April 23, 2023. She was posing for the magazine’s cover alongside Kate, who is now 41 years old. “I had thought about naming her Rebecca, but as we were speeding down the 405 freeway, I just knew. This is a Kate,” Goldie said with a smile.

Kate’s Natural Birth Experience with Bingham
Fast forward to Kate’s own experience as a mother, and she had a completely different journey with her son Bingham, who is now 8 years old. “Having Bing was such an amazing experience because it was the first time any of us in the family had a natural birth,” Kate shared with Goldie. “And the best part? You were there, Mom. It was incredible to have you by my side.”
“Oh, I was so thrilled to be invited into that room,” Goldie chimed in, her voice filled with emotion. “But imagine our surprise when Bingham came into the world and turned out to be a boy. I was so certain I was having a girl that I even knitted a pink blanket for him while waiting. Can you believe it? When he arrived, I saw a little penis, and I just wrapped him in that pink blanket anyway. Classic Goldie!”
Kate’s Surprise-Free Arrival of Daughter Rani Rose
After the unexpected arrival of Bingham, Kate didn’t want any surprises when she got pregnant with her third child, Rani Rose. “I was like, no way am I going through that again. I need to know what I’m dealing with this time around,” Kate joked, referring to her two sons, Bingham and Ryder, who is 16. “We did a gender reveal, and oh my gosh, I was so shocked and excited when I found out it was a girl. I couldn’t believe it. I thought for sure I’d be a boy mom forever!”
Rani’s birth was nothing short of magical for Kate. “Every single moment of that birth was absolutely beautiful,” Kate gushed, her eyes lighting up at the memory. “It was such a special day for me.”
