After an incredible journey of 18 years of marriage, five beautiful children, a burgeoning TV network, and a flourishing home decor empire, Chip and Joanna Gaines have done it all together. Recently, they opened up about the inevitable challenges that come with such an extraordinary journey and whether they ever considered walking away from each other amidst the whirlwind of their success.
During a candid joint interview with Access Hollywood, Chip, now 46, revealed the couple's steadfast commitment to one another. "Our superpower is that Jo and I are not quitters," he explained. "Throwing in the towel is something that, honestly, never even crosses our minds. This mindset became a cornerstone of our relationship early on," he continued, emphasizing their unwavering dedication to each other.
The Foundation That Keeps Their Marriage Strong
Chip elaborated on the strength of their bond: "It’s fascinating to realize that divorce or walking away from one another was never truly an option for us. That foundation, that unyielding commitment, has served us incredibly well." Chip went on to share that while they've faced numerous challenges, they've never entertained the thought of giving up. "Things have been tough at times. We’re not perfect, and we’ve had our fair share of trials and errors, just like anyone else. But the idea of throwing in the towel? That’s just not who we are," he affirmed.

Recalling past difficulties, Chip shared, "When I think about the tough times we’ve faced, like the real estate crisis, Jo and I had numerous opportunities to throw in the towel, but quitting simply isn’t in our DNA." He continued, "We’ve learned that you can’t lose if you don’t quit. Jo and I show up every day, sometimes nailing it, other times not so much, but we keep moving forward, one step at a time."
The Sentimental Value Behind Joanna's Engagement Ring
On a lighter note, Chip revealed his desire to upgrade Joanna's engagement ring to something more extravagant, reflecting their current success. However, Joanna had other plans. "He had a limited budget back then," Joanna began, laughing, while Chip chimed in, "My budget was whatever I could borrow from my mom, who, bless her heart, said, 'Chip, I don’t have any money either!'"
Chip proposed to Joanna in 2002 after a year of dating. He took her to a mall in Waco, Texas, allowing her to design her own ring—a round diamond set in an antique-style platinum setting. Despite the opportunity to upgrade to a grander stone, Joanna declined, cherishing the sentimental value. "To me, this ring isn’t about the diamond’s quality; it’s about the story behind it," Joanna explained. "It’s about Chip working tirelessly to give me something that meant the world to him. So, I’d never want to change it."
